BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — The Hungarian swimming federation says Andras Hargitay has been named to lead the national team following the resignation of Laszlo Kiss.

Hargitay, a three-time world champion and 1972 Olympic bronze medalist in the 400-meter individual medley, will be assisted by Csaba Sos and Sandor Wladar and will keep his job as a veterinarian.

Kiss resigned on Thursday after it became known that he has been convicted of rape along with two other swimmers in 1962 and given a three-year prison sentence.

The 60-year-old Hargitay was promoted from his post as coach of Hungary's youth teams. He already held the top position from 1984-88.

Hargitay says the job comes with "incredible responsibility, especially now, in an Olympic year and a month before the European championships."
