Top-ranked Jason Day skipping Rio Olympics because of Zika

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Jason Day pulled out of the Olympics on Tuesday because of the Zika virus, costing golf its No. 1 player as it returns from a century-long absence at the games.

The sport has lost two of its biggest stars in the last week, adding to the perception that the Olympics are not a high priority. Rory McIlroy, a four-time major champion, also said Zika will keep from competing in Rio de Janeiro.

Shane Lowry withdraws from Olympics over Zika concern

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Shane Lowry of Ireland has pulled out of the Olympics because of concerns over the Zika virus.

Lowry said Tuesday he received medical advice that he should not travel to Rio de Janeiro. Lowry recently married and said he hopes to start a family soon.

Ledecky cruises into 200 free semis at US Olympic trials

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Michael Phelps led all the way in winning his preliminary heat of the 200-meter butterfly at the U.S. Olympic trials Tuesday in his debut swim.

The 18-time Olympic champion touched first in 1 minute, 56.68 seconds to lead 15 other swimmers into the evening semifinals. Phelps' first race on Day 3 of the eight-day meet drew the loudest cheers.

Pace Clark was second-fastest in 1:56.90. Jack Conger was third at 1:57.33.
