WEMBLEY, England (AP) — The U.S. leads Japan 1-0 at halftime of the women's gold medal soccer game, thanks to Carli Lloyd's header in the eighth minute.

Despite the scoreline, Japan dominated possession and the scoring chances. Aya Miyama banged a hard shot from 12 yards off the crossbar in the 33rd minute, and Shinobu Ohno went just wide five minutes later with a right-footed shot from the top of the circle.

Yuki Ogimi missed two chances in the 18th minute. U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo punched the Japan striker's header off the crossbar and the ball fell to Rachel Buehler, whose clearance attempt went right back to Ogimi. She took another shot from close range, only to see it sky over the crossbar.

The Americans' best chance after Lloyd's score was in the 28th minute, courtesy of a near-own goal by Azusa Iwashimizu. Iwashimizu headed the ball off her own post, but it caromed away.
