Brazil Rio Security Cuts

AP Interview: Rio security head says cuts impact Olympics

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Rio de Janeiro's state security secretary acknowledges that cuts of $550 million to his budget pose a risk to the Olympics when they open in three months.

"If I said the cuts won't impact anything, I wouldn't be accurate," Jose Mariano Beltrame told The Associated Press during a sit-down interview this week. "I wish I could have more policemen. I wish they could work twice as much on the streets."

Havelange turns 100 in Rio; plans to attend Olympics

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Joao Havelange delivered an impassioned speech seven years ago in French, urging fellow International Olympic Committee members to choose Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Olympics.

Part of the Brazilian's pitch included an invitation for IOC members to join him to celebrate his 100th birthday in Rio on the eve of the games.

The day has arrived.
