So it turns out Olympic golf does matter to Rory McIlroy.
McIlroy was among the top four players in the world who pulled out of the Olympics. He caused the biggest stink when he said at the British Open that he got into golf to win championships, not to grow the game. He also said golf wouldn't be one of the Olympic sports he would watch on TV, only "the stuff that matters."
Gold medal winner Justin Rose said McIlroy was among the congratulatory texts he received Sunday night.
"He said he was very, very proud. He said he was pulling for me," Rose said Monday. "He said he could see how much it meant to me. He was very complimentary."
Rose paused slightly and added with a smile, "Obviously, he watched."
