American swimmer Lilly King showed her feisty side when she engaged in some trash talk with Russian rival Yulia Efimova en route to winning the gold medal in the 100-meter breast stroke.
The spat drew plenty of attention toward her Twitter page, where she has a mention of the website www.melanieisthebomb.com. It's a tribute to Melanie Richmond, a friend of King's at Reitz High School in Evansville, Indiana, who died in 2013.
She's been with me all the way. This one's for Mel! https://t.co/xKPdwyFwV2

As the Evansville Courier and Press reports, King and Reitz met as high school freshmen. The two became fast friends and King would help Melanie with her technique as she prepared to swim in the Special Olympics.
"Lilly was always willing to stay and help her after practice with flip turns, or getting off the blocks, whatever," Melanie's mother, Ruth Richmond, told the newspaper. "She was a great inspiration to Melanie and a great help to Melanie."
