It's over for the "The Machine" at the Summer Olympics.
Latvia's Maris Strombergs is known by a nickname he earned by being the only man to win BMX gold at the Games since the cycling race was introduced as a medal event in Beijing in 2008. He repeated in 2012 in London.
But the run came to an end during a windy, crash-filled quarterfinal round in Rio on Thursday. Strombergs barely missed the cut.
Tough day, a lot of emotions going thru my head. I have a lot to think about and need time to let everything sink in a bit! Thank you everyone for all the support and love over the years! Good luck everyone chasing that Gold tmrw Smaga un emocionāla diena. Paldies visiem savējiem par atbalstu un līdzi jušanu. Ir labi laiku pa laikam kļūt mazam, lai augtu liels!!! #81 #Latvija
Latvia coach Ivo Lakucs said that the 29-year-old Strombergs had decided before Rio that this would be his final Olympic Games. Not even Friday's disappointing could change Strombergs' mind.
