RIO DE JANEIRO -- Belgium posted the highest Olympic goal total in men’s field hockey in 36 years Sunday night during a 12-0 rout of host Brazil.
The Belgians fired 30 shots, and ten players scored as they tallied the most goals since India beat Cuba 13-0 on July 24, 1980 in Moscow.
A team had reached double digits just two other times since that day before Belgium’s outburst -- South Korea defeated Egypt 11-0 in 2004 and Australia rolled past South Africa 10-0 in 2008.
India set the record for a match when it throttled the United States 24-1 during the 1932 Games in Los Angeles.
In the other late contest, Spain upset No. 1 Australia 1-0. The Spaniards managed just two shots, but got all they needed when Alex Casasayas scored just 5:57 into the match.
