There’s a lot of work that goes into getting a beach ready for beach volleyball.

In addition to the volunteers who rake the sand and smooth out the footprints before each match, the day begins with a pair of workers running a metal detector over the playing surface to make sure there’s nothing dangerous for the players to step on.

Nothing was found before Tuesday’s semifinals _ unlike in Beijing in 2008 when Kerri Walsh Jennings lost her wedding ring during her opening match. She had already called her husband, fellow beach volleyball pro Casey Jennings, to have a duplicate made, but venue officials combed the sand and found it for her.
