On a picturesque day off Guanabara Bay, with hundreds of sail boats training on the nearby water, U.S. track and field and women’s volleyball athletes and coaches obliged a couple of hundred Brazilian Navy cadets who wanted to meet the famous Americans.

High jumper Inika McPherson posed for photos and gave a thumbs up sign along with one cadet, then held her phone way out to snap a selfie. Long jumper and relay participant Jarrion Lawson made sure to capture the moment, too, and jumped into photo opportunities.

With his team done training for the day, weight lifting and lunch also complete in early afternoon Thursday, U.S. women’s volleyball coach Karch Kiraly _ the only player to ever win gold in both beach volleyball and indoor _ chatted up the cadets. Players from the top-ranked U.S. squad, Kelsey Robinson and Carli Lloyd, listened intently to several others and setter Courtney Thompson stood among a group of smiling cadets.

“Awesome!” Thompson said.
