Michael Phelps may be the story of Olympic swimming of the Rio Games. But Simone Manuel almost stole the show.
Manuel won gold in the 100-meter freestyle Thursday, and her tearful response quickly made her a sensation on social media. She gained thousands of followers as fans celebrated her achievement and the milestone of her win. She is the first African-American woman to win a gold medal in an individual swimming event.

Manuel actually tied a 16-year-old swimmer from Canada for first place, which means they both earn gold medals.
