Dailiah Muhammad winning gold and Ashley Spencer winning bronze in the women's 400-meter hurdles Thursday night were medals No. 99 and No. 100, respectively.
And now the Americans have a shot at history.
The U.S. record for medals at a non-boycotted Olympics, as well as for an Olympics on foreign soil, is 110 _ set in Beijing eight years ago. And there's still three days left, with some medal locks such as the U.S. women's water polo and U.S. women's basketball teams, both of which are assured no worse than silver.
